Re: New food from vet - portion advice
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll tweak things a bit and see how she gets on.

New food from vet - portion advice
Our Minnie has been put on a specialist food by the vet (RC Calm dry food). The vet has also asked us to try to get her weight down a bit, as she's a little chunky. They have recommended to feed twice a day. For her weight, it's recommended for 55g of the food per day to try to get her weight down a...

Re: Hair Loss / Skin Irritation
Hi, Our Minnie has had a similar issue, nibbling at herself and resulting in small patches of thin hair. She's also broken the skin in places. Initially it was thought that it was a flea allergy. She's on Bravecto flea treatment and our most recent vet trip last week confirmed there was now no flea ...

Re: How much to feed?
When we first got our Minnie from PAWS shelter, she was approx 4.5kg. Initially we had trouble finding some foods that she'd eat, but stumbled on Gourmet Gold pates and the Perfect Fit complete dry food - she loves these. Feeding her a tin of pate for breakfast (actually half a tin, then half a tin ...

Re: Fat cat - best course of action
Dug out the laser pen, and it's a hit !! In fact, when she's in the mood, she gets better exercise chasing this than the feather dangler toy.

Re: Fat cat - best course of action
We have tried a laser pen in the early days but she didn't chase it much though. She'd follow it with her head all over the place but she'd only go for it if it's within arms reach. I'll have to dig it out again and see if we can encourage her to play with it.

Re: Fat cat - best course of action
Option 2 was my first instinct as well, in fact that's what we started doing yesterday. She's used to getting to getting food at certain times of the day so I think it'll be easier to give her smaller portions at her 'regular' meal times, rather than miss out a meal completely. Exercise-wise she doe...

Fat cat - best course of action
Hi. When we first got our Minnie a few months ago, she was just over 4.5kg. The nurse at the vets weighed her today and she's just over 5kg. We've noticed her slightly getting fatter and I think it's ultimately down to lack of activity. She does go outside, but she doesn't like to stay out for long,...

Re: Fish or meat.....does it matter?
We've only had our Minnie for a month or so, adopted from a local shleter. I'm told at the shelter she used to eat whatever she was given/whatever was donated. When we got her, we started her on felix AGAIL, and she would hardly touch it. We went through a number of different types of food until we ...

Re: Cat Has Fleas
After adopting our kitty a couple of weeks ago, we're undecided about what to use going forward for flea treatment ourselves. We have 1 pipette of Stronghold that the rescue centre gave us, which is going on her in a week or so, but we need to be making a decision on what to buy for the next doses....

Perched on the sofa - her lookout spot, where she likes to watch for the hamster (cage is behind).

Re: Preparing to home a cat
2 weeks on, and Minne seems well at home. We bought her a new igloo bed and put in near the radiator in the living room so now she likes to spend a lot of her sleeping time in there as opposed to on the top of the sofa, watching the hamster :-) This weekend she seemed to take an interest in going ou...

If it's a hard floor, would a big blob of blu-tac underneath the bowl help to secure it down perhaps ?

Re: Dry Food Samples
I took a punt on a bag of Perfect Fit dry food today on impulse whilst I was browsing in The Range. Minnie took one sniff of them this afternoon and started munching away happily, and cleared the plate. Looks like we might have found something to her taste. Whether it's down to the brand or the fact...

Re: PAWS, Todmorden
I just wanted to give a shout out to recommend this lovely little shelter in Todmorden.
This is where we adopted our Minnie from, and the volunteers at the shelter have been a great help in giving advice getting things ready for the new arrival.

Re: New cat obsessed with our hamster
I would try and make sure that the hamster does have somewhere he can hide away from the staring eyes of Minnie should he want to. Totally agree, the little hamster may be scared stiff when he sees the cat staring in, don’t want to have a heart attack. I’m sure you will make sure he feels safe thou...

Re: New cat obsessed with our hamster
I'm convinced she'd happily attack if given the chance - in the wild, she would be his natural predator, but the cage is built like a tank and with the added protection, the little hammy is safe. I'm sure she's not sat there wanting to be friends. It's quite a large cage with plenty of hidey holes s...

New cat obsessed with our hamster
We've noticed that our newly adopted Minnie is obsessed with our hamster - I assume it's something brand new to her. She can't get at him at all as I've added an extra layer of perspex (with airholes) around the cage so she can't get her paws/claws in between the cage bars. She just loves to perch h...

Re: Dry Food Samples
If you went with hirds, they have samples of the brand they sell (Lucy has the renal variety), alternatively Pets at Home have a very good money back guarantee, I've taken open bags back before. I'm sure Royal Canin offer money back rather than samples. As May says, lots of brands sell smaller bags...

Dry Food Samples
We've just adopted a 2yr old female from PAWS shelter in Todmorden (recommended!! - lovely people) Little Minnie is still settling in and we're trying to find food that she's happy to eat. Felix AGAIL was not to her liking (except the chicken flavour), but we've found that the Gourmet Gold Pates and...

Re: Preparing to home a cat
She’s slowly settling in. Day 1 she came out of the carrier straight away in the bonding room to greet us. Seemed happy albeit wouldn’t really eat much. It was impossible to keep her in the bonding room. She stayed in there about 6 hours before she forced her way out of the door as we were coming in...

It's all go-ahead following our home visit from our local shelter, so all being well we're picking up our new cat at the weekend. Now I know that's everything is definite, I'm looking at things like vet registration and insurance - this particular query is about insurance. We did discuss insurance a...

Re: Heavy cleaning of cleaning litter boxes
Reading that I don't think a once a week soak and rinse is going to do much harm, particularly as the litter tray is left to soak in a room with the window open and the door shut. It sounds like it is mainly about people who are using bleach most of the day at work and constantly breathing the fume...

Hi My big boy (who my vet referred to as fat!) likes 2 x pouches of Whiskers in gravy and he loves Perfect Fit (which is fairly new) dry food. I have bought a 'slim ball' for his dry food to make him work for his dinner. Is that one of those things that they need to roll around the place in order f...

Re: Heavy cleaning of cleaning litter boxes
I think what you're describing might be damage from urine and doesn't wash away. We disinfectant weekly with Safe 4 disinfectant (I like the clear version), leave it for 10 minutes and then rinse and dry. I'm pretty sure it'll be from the urine. It will be a type of 'scaling' where we have seen som...

Feliway - Shelter cat settling in
We're looking to adopt a 2-3 yr old female from a local shelter in a week or so, once things like the home check has been taken care of. I've been reading about Feliway. Whilst Feliway may (or may not) help the new addition to the family when first settling in, I was wondering if Feliway was somethi...
