Dry, Flaky Skin

Post by LittlePenBigHeart »

Wondering if anyone can suggest anything.

Our two youngest cats are ragdoll crosses, and both are rescues who have a few health problems. One of them is a few sandwiches short of a picnic and we think she might have been a little deprived of oxygen during the birth. She was very wobbly on her legs for the first year and now she's almost two she's finally learned to jump really well but that took until a few months ago. The older of the two is plagued with tummy troubles. Any chicken at all causes him to poo blood, any grains at all results in the same thing and he then also suffers sporadic bouts of diarrhoea with no obvious cause. The vet has got us giving him prebiotics in case it's a leaky gut. In the meantime, all the cats are on Canagan - around 60% real meat and grain free so a very good food.

Despite that, while the eldest cat is in pretty perfect condition, the two youngest, the ones with the health issues from birth, have constant dry, flaky skin. It's normally diet-related in cats but we know it can't be because we're already giving them everything we can and it's still happening. You can't see it all the time but the second you groom them at all, it falls off them like dandruff and since they're both black, it really shows up.

Anyone know what might be causing it?

Most dry cat foods are low on protein and high on carbs, which is the opposite of what nature requires for a cat’s health. The solution is More protein. Consider buying a higher protein food and/or mixing some wet food into your cat’s diet, and see how their skin fares.
If you think your cat has an allergy, ask your vet to help you plan an elimination diet to identify the source of the allergy.
