This afternoon. The vet came out and gave Emily a sedative first. She fell asleep in my arms with me talking to her.

Yesterday she was bright and naughty and greedy and noisy as ever. This morning it was clear she was going into uraemia.

I'm glad for her sake that it happened so fast. She was 17. She came to me off the streets and this is her song -

I'm so sorry to hear this, but glad she was bright till the end, RIP Emily

I am so sorry, I always feel it is better for them if it is quick at the end, but I think it is far harder for those of us left behind.

It hasn't hit me yet - I go over and over what happened, and memories and all that, my commonsense told me she had to go eventually but it's still a shock, even when you know, and also it's as if she's still here, out of sight but in the next room as that poem has it.
