Renal food
Hi all. Haven't posted for a while... Our Millie has been diagnosed with kidney disease, and I have a box of different renal foods that she is refusing to have anything to do with. If anyone in London (we're in Hackney/Stoke Newington) can use it, there's about £60+ worth of food there. I'd be grate...

Re: Kidney disease and food
I'm going to ask about phosphate binders. Difficult to know if she's nauseous or not. She trots happily out into the garden every morning and eats plants that she then promptly throws up when she comes back inside, but she's always done that! Got back this evening to find she has something wrong wit...

Re: Kidney disease and food
Hello greenkitty. Nice to see you're still on here! It's allergies that are a bit of a problem with renal food. She can have the Hills k/d tins, but not pouches or dry. I've written/emailed/phoned most manufacturers and waiting to hear back from one or two of them. Will try the Fortiflora as well. A...

Re: Kidney disease and food
Thanks for that. She is being particularly difficult with the food. Nothing is good enough and clearly we are trying to poison her. I think we're going to go ahead with the dental, so will speak to the vet about food at the same time. She will still eat the Carny senior, which I gather is better tha...

Re: Kidney disease and food
Thanks for your replies. Booktigger, I don't know the numbers, unfortunately. She was eating Applaws, Carny senior, Butchers Choice (actually I don't think it's called that, but it's the cheapish food with orange labels!), HiLife, and a couple of others, with Josera Culinesse kibble occasionally. Wh...

Re: Kidney disease and food
Yes, have been getting just about all my food info from Zooplus. Can't give her Kattovit because I think it has soy in it, oil/flour. It's really difficult because almost everything has one or more of her allergens in it, plus she would win any competition for fussiness hands/paws down.

I should add as well that I know Integra contains potato. She can eat small quantities of this from time to time, but it's not something I can feed her on a daily basis.

Kidney disease and food
Hi guys. Haven't been on here for a looooong time. However, our 16 year old cat, Millie, has just been diagnosed with kidney disease and I'm looking for a bit of advice. The kidney disease was discovered through blood tests because apparently she needs a dental and needs to have four teeth out. Appa...

I am so sorry to read this, Mark. Have been away and only just catching up. What a sad time it's been on here.
I'm sure there will be a Laz-shaped hole in your lives for a long time. All best wishes from me and Millie xx

I've only just caught up with this. I am so sorry, Julia. Terrible time for both of you. Our Wilma had a brain tumour a couple of years ago and looking back, we put her through far too much to see if there was anything we could do to help. There wasn't and I wish we had just opted for palliative car...

Re: Vets don't know what's wrong - cat with diarrhea!
Better late than never. Millie also had squits, constipation, skin problems, all sorts. Cost us a fortune until one vet suggested having allergy tests done. And she is allergic to lamb, soy, Brewer's yeast, peas, potatoes and oats. It's the lamb, peas and potatoes that are the most difficult to avoi...

We use Advantage rather than Advocat because it had a similar effect on one of our cats a couple of years ago.

Oh dear, what a day for you. I am sure you're doing exactly the right thing. It is awful having to leave them, but he's in the best place and at least you'll know at the end of it what you're dealing with. Will be thinking of you both over the next couple of days.

Re: 3 month old kitten keeps weeing on the bed
That's good news. Make sure you have enough litter trays for him as well so he feels comfortable. Some cats won't use a dirty tray, so better to have one tray per cat plus one extra. Long may the wee-free cuddles last!!

Re: skin issues of unknown cause
Our cat Millie has multiple allergies, it turns out. We had blood tests done in the end and she is allergic to lamb, oats, soya, yeast, potatoes and peas. You wouldn't believe how many catfoods have at least one of those ingredients, and the biggest problem is the lamb because most manufacturers lis...

Re: Constipated Kitty
Are you in the UK? I'm not sure it's that unusual for a cat to poo only every other day. Our Millie seems to have settled down to do that. What do you feed her? If you feed her dry food, could you change to wet so it keeps her better hydrated? Could you add something like psyllium husks to her food ...

Re: Dustmite allergy
At the moment she is just scratching and nibbling for England. With the food allergies, she used to be sick a lot, had terrible constipation, and blocked anal glands all the time. Most of those have cleared up with the exclusion of the six allergens we know about, but she is still scratching. I'm tr...

At its very worst we took her one week and had to take her 10 days later! Then it calmed down, thankfully. She hasn't needed to have them cleared for several months now.

Re: Blocked anal glands....
Millie had this problem for a long time, and we now feed her about half a capsule of ground psyllium in her food. She can't eat a lot of other food though because she has turned out to have multiple allergies. However, since we've got those under control, the anal glands issue seems to be much bette...

Dustmite allergy
Soooo...getting the food allergies under control, but something is still setting off frantic itching in Millie, and I have a horrible feeling it might be dustmites, of which there will be millions and squillions in this house. Has anyone had any success with sprays or anything to try to control dust...

Re: Cat Asthma?
Someone else asked about feline asthma a few weeks ago, and I pointed them to the direction of the Yahoo group. This is US based, but very helpful and friendly. The only thing you'll struggle with is that they'll tell you to make your boy indoor-only. Our Fred was very much an outdoor and indoor cat...

Re: Cat Asthma?
I had a cat with feline asthma. I would advise you to get him to the vet sooner rather than later. Yes, some of the tests are invasive, but if he does have asthma, then bear in mind every time he has an attack, it damages the tissues a little bit more. It's frightening for him, and for you. Check hi...

Yes, of course I meant changing the type of litter!! There are so many different sorts. Millie for example refuses point blank to use anything made from yesterday's newsprint!

Katalax substitute anyone?
Back to the digestive issue... Millie does very well taking a daily dose of Katalax, but it is sooooooo expensive. Has anyone found a substitute that doesn't contain anything else than soft paraffin, cod liver oil and malt extract? She can't have anything with yeast, soya, peas, potatoes, lamb or oa...

Millie is not keen on the Grau paste. She likes Katalax (she would, given the price) and she likes the Trixie one, but not the Grau. Sigh.
