Need help homeless kittens

Post by Kitty »

I really need help. I have a mum cat .. a cat of hers from her previous litter (i know this by it taking milk from mum and sleeping etc with them all together)and 2 kittens all living in my garden over 3 weeks. The local shelters will not help. One is just 2 roads away. I have tried 10 !! All full waiting list months away. I have been feeding them all for all this time, which is hard im not working. I also have to feed any cat in the garden at the same time so kittens get some. I have been offered neuter and return !! They are not my cats. The local rescue knows as they took 2 which were here a yr ago.. one pregnant one the owner chucked her out.. but this time i was told "im not taking any not friendly (which they are) im not taking any if not as i have some here which are not, why should i when i can take friendly cats. You need to take them in your house and pick them up" i said they are not my cats im trying to help them.. he said "well they are not my cats either you cant expect everyone to do everythong for you" i was disgusted as is every shelter i have spoke to since. Im allergic to cats but STILL i do touch them stroke them etc. I come out in welts temperature.. yesterday my lip blew up like a balloon. I have one sheltet who has told me they will take if IF i take all 4 in my car.. how i dont know ! And its on outskirts of city. And if not sociable they will return them. They are but im at my wits end . What do i do. How do i take all 4.. i have no one to help me. I hardly leave house due to my health. I have had to help a cat 3 wks ago who i seen in garden with ite eye hanging out and face half gone. Owner didnt believe keeping cats inside. I nearly passed out. After knowing these shelters will not help i wont help any again.. there is more rudeness and let down from them too but il be here all day. I need to get them all there tomorrow morning i have been told. Its the only option i have been given. Advice please im in birmingham :(

Hi and welcome. It’s really good of you to help these cats and I understand your frustration but unfortunately most rescues are full to bursting, especially at the moment as it’s kitten season. There won’t be just you ringing they will probably be at their wits end with many of members of the public ringing to take in their cats. Also rescues are run by volunteers who often work and most rescues are struggling to get volunteers to help out. We had a feral colony in our area and three of us TNR released them because the rescues wouldn’t take them in, and some are still here, some have passed on. What we did was contact our local Cats Protection, they gave us traps, we arranged taking them in with the vets as they have an agreement with CP and then took them home and released them but we’ve continued to provide food and shelter as we had no choice. But they are treated like our own cats, and are very well loved. If you can’t look after these cats it’s still important to get them all neutered otherwise you will have even more to deal with. If you can handle the cats that’s better you just need carriers to transport them. If you don’t know of anyone with carriers then ask a rescue to loan you some or if you go on Facebook you could post and ask rescues in your area for help.
Here is a list of rescues in your area, there may be some you’ve missed and who will help, CP are usually very good so you could try them if you’ve not already done so but there are many more:

I would also get them down on the lists as the sooner you do the sooner you will get help.

Best of luck!

I have taken them yesterday..all 4 of them. To a rescue on the other side of town.. far away from me. It killed me. The sibling was terrible to get in the cage. I had gloves on but still scratched. Im ill and it killed me but what could I do as no one would help. What gets me is how rude 2 rescues were.. literally.. I was speachless. Theres no need for it even if are volunteers. After what I have experienced I dont think I can help any again. That is 7 I have helped altogether.. one was returned as microchiped and I found it 3 weeks ago with its whole eyeball hanging out and half face gone.. owner "doesnt believe in keeping cats inside" I nearly passed out. I had it on my settee untill I got help.. im sure its been put to sleep. I have cried. Now even though my health is bad I have tried my best. The rescue yesterday still wasnt happy as kittens older than they thought and Was complaining.. i just felt like rubbish.. i put them before my own health and I get treated bad. How can rescues say they are not my cats you cant expect everyone to do everything for you !!! And im never rude back.. I just felt like crying with both those rescues. I dont see how I can help anymore.. including the male one in the avenue last few yrs and makes alot pregnant. I waited 4 months for one rescue to help and he ALSO said not my cats..after 4 mths !!! Thats it for me now. How can people walk past that cat with the pewtrid flesh. Its disgusting.

Yes, Kitty, I'm afraid you do come up against this attitude now and again and you're quite right; there's no need for it. People who speak to you or treat you like that are alienating the very help (yours) that's needed. They have the proper facilities (however overflowing - understatement at this time of year  ) and they can take the cats/kittens and go home to their own anonymous residence without the fear of repercussions from offended neighbours/owners. You've been at the coal face and I'm not surprised you're fed up (another understatement.)

However. People like that are in a very small minority. From my experience of cats' rescue workers, most of them are great and DO walk the extra mile whenever they can, despite continual time, space and cash crises, so please don't give up hope. Such people deserve ALL the support we can give them, and they DO support us if we have a cat-in-need crisis.

Yes, I've rung the RSPCA and been accused of trying to dump my own kittens, despite the RSPCA having been involved with that particular community for some while. I lost my rag and said sharply that I was doing their job for them - glad I did fight back. (The CP took the kittens; shouldn't have offered them to the RSPCA but I was inexperienced.) A certain cat rescue worker (14 years ago and NOT of the CP) who had encouraged me to take in kittens from a derelict shed and from under the nose of the guy who hadn't bothered to neuter their mother (he came and went, usually went, and I'd been warned he could be nasty) turned round and said, 'now what are YOU going to do about these kittens, Lil?' Seemed I was to find homes for them and advertise. When the original agreement had been for me to take them for a few days, socialise them, and let the rescue smuggle them out to a safe destination out of the street. I was scared stiff lol! Wish I'd turned round on her too. She wasn't God and I never supported her shelter again.

In every walk of life, there's always one (or a few) silly beggars who lay the law down. Even though you can see what they are, they still manage to hurt.

But. It's the cats who need us. People like you who can hold the fort until the CP, rescues etc who are expert at the nitty gritty, the fostering, rehabilitation, home checks etc can step in, are invaluable and you've done great things for these cats. You've walked the extra mile and more by the sound, especially in view of health problems/allergy, and anyone who's undervalued you needs a kick up the ****. :)

You know, don't you, that this will probably happen again, and that (at some future date) you'll probably do it again, for the cats' sake, no matter how agonising the situation. At least now you know who to avoid.

I think you've done a brilliant job. Although you couldn't save that poor cat with the injured face, those other cats are now set for good new lives. Congrats! :)

Thank you so much.. i needed that. :) I feel like they think ( not feel I know it as they have more or less said it) they are doing ME the favour.. not the cats. I have told them I could have shoved the cats and kittens out of my garden and blocked up excess instead of spending a fortune every week on food and making them shelter and boxes. Every time I said not my cats I got told not mine either !! I should name and shame them rescues.. but thank you again for your appreciation xxx
